Ostia Antica has me Almost Speechless

It is peaceful, beautiful, easy to get around, (much easier than Pompeii), and there are few visitors. I had a wonderful day.

The archaeological staff member kindly allowed me to take her photo. The third picture in this set shows the terracotta conduits in the Caldarium through which hot air traveled to heat the room.

This is the Castle of Pope Julius II (to the right) (late 1400AD) and the Santa Aurea church (300AD) both of which are outside of the ancient site but close by in the village.

    1. Yes, I went in July 2014 and found it so uncomfortably hot it spoilt my appreciation of what I did, the forum, vatican museums etc, all unbearable, (I read your post!). So this last trip with Ostia was in November. Perfect! Fine clear days but not hot. Only thing I had to factor in was short days, it was getting dark and sun setting at 4.30 so had to plan for that.
